 ABOUT PODERI CRISCI 

Poderi Crisci vineyard encompasses 7.7 hectares on a north facing slope set amongst a sheltered amphitheatre and a narrow rocky strip believed to be 30 million set years older than the rest of the Island.

Located at the end of a country lane, Poderi Crisci is a family-owned vineyard and restaurant with Italian flair and a passion for traditional winemaking. For four generations the Crisci family have been immersed in the art of food and wine. Antonio, born and raised in Napoli, arrived in NZ in the early ’90s quickly making a name for himself in the Auckland scene with the establishment of Toto restaurant in Nelson Street. With his partner Vivienne Farnell they opened Non Solo Pizza in 1996, now an institution in Parnell.

The first merlot vines were planted in 2000. The success of the first vines led to the planting of other grape varieties and vegetable gardens with Poderi Crisci being founded in 2008 and the restaurant opening in 2010. Antonio, a visionary, has transformed the Waiheke Island vineyard into a place people will visit to wine, dine and have ‘layers of experience.’

Poderi Crisci is without doubt a destination worthy of the journey.

 

   

 THE EXECUTIVE

The Executive 

Antonio Crisci’s life long passion for flavours begun with his grandmother teaching him the secrets of Italian cuisine, in his mum’s kitchen- Napoli, Southern Italy. His love of food drove him to open his first restaurant in his hometown at the tender age of 19.

With dreams of sailing around the world, Antonio left Italy with his travels eventually leading him to arrive by yacht to Paihia, NZ in 1991. He made his way to Auckland working in a few restaurants and was surprised by how few European products were accessible in NZ’s largest city. Still keen to see more of the world he travelled to Australia, Indonesia and back to Europe then decided to make NZ his home in 1993. Within a few months he begun to introduce his favourite Italian flavours through his vision of what an Italian restaurant should be, ‘Toto’ in Nelson St, Auckland. The flagship restaurant was welcomed with great enthusiasm in the somewhat barren dining scene of the era and quickly attracted Auckland’s movers & shakers. It is also where he met the then Maitre’D of ‘Toto’, and now life and business partner, Vivienne Farnell. They have two daughters, Bella & Marilena, who are the inspiration in Antonios life.

 OUR WINE & WHAT WE PRODUCE

THE WINE

Our wines are lovingly produced in French oak barriques over an 18 month period in our underground cellar. Possibly the most beautiful cellar room in Waiheke.

Influenced by old world styled wine and grape varieties, our wines are produced with a respect for nature and minimal intervention on the wine making process. Focus is on quality above all else with the majority of vineyard work carried out by hand.

All the fruit used for Poderi Crisci wines is estate grown and selectively hand harvested. The grapes are extensively sorted in the vineyard to ensure that only the very best fruit comes into the winery, a second more intensive sorting process is then carried out prior the crushing, finishing with a natural melalactic and aged in French oak barrique using 25% of new oak for the red varieties.

THE GARDEN

One of the finest examples of a kitchen garden lines the entrance to Poderi Crisci. It is not uncommon to see the chefs in the garden sourcing what are definitely the freshest possible ingredients and herbs. Our garden is carefully managed by our talented head gardener providing fresh seasonal produce all year round.

From a bountiful herb garden, salad leaves and tomatoes, to artichokes, figs, pumpkin and some of the finest zucchini you will ever see. We truly believe you cannot match the goodness that comes when you go straight from the garden to plate. Via the kitchen of course.

The garden highlights the importance that we place in fresh ingredients used with high quality condiments such as our own olive oil and Sapa. Finish your meal with Agrumetto Citrus liqueur, Aquavite and other Italian influenced speciality products created at the vineyard.

Another reason things just taste better at Poderi Crisci.

   

 WINE NOTES 

Poderi Crisci Zefiro

A new, exciting addition to our range. A prosecco style sparkling pinot grigio with the most flirtatious fine bean that dances over the palate. Crisp, dry yet flavoursome, a great way to start the day.

Poderi Crisci Ombra

An exciting Sparkling Rose with a fine yeasty, fresh bakery character reminiscent of Champagne. Floral nose contains hints of wild strawberry, peach nectarine and cassis. On the Palate, fine beads, very refreshing dry aperitif style. Wild Blackberry and Peachy with a great mouth feel and good length.

Poderi Crisci Rose (Merlot Predominant)

A great example of a Merlot Bianco style wine in the fashion of the southern French and Italian Roses. From Merlot grapes, the Rose displays light summer fruits with a flinty earthy character. The Salmon blush hints at the body, light and playful, a fresh lively Rosé, with a great structure with a very refreshing palate, dry style with a lingering fresh finish to stand up to all great summer luncheons. .

Poderi Crisci Pinot Grigio

Subtle pale straw with mineral notes, pear, quince and honeydew melon on the nose. Hints of roses and Turkish delight starting to come through but still hidden by flinty minerality. Quite rich but also very focused, more pinot grigio floral character on the palate wixed with orange zest. Good mineral drive on the finish.

Poderi Crisci Arneis

Poderi Crisci proudly lines up against a select group of NZ vineyards producing this exciting and cheeky variety from the Piemonte region in the north of Italy. Arneis is a colloquial term, translating to “Little Rascal”, a wine that exhibits intense citrus notes with apple, pear and vanilla in a bone dry style. A refreshing wine that is best enjoyed with delicate seafoods, sunshine, and company. Poderi Crisci is currently producing the only Waiheke grown Arneis.

Poderi Crisci Chardonnay

An elegant Chardonnay with a flirtatious light straw colour. Incredibly complex, flinty nose offering hints of freshly grilled nuts (almond) and marzipan alongside zests of citrus fruits.. A very finely structured wine with a good drive leading into a great lingering finish. An unmistakable Burgundian style Chardonnay.

Poderi Crisci “Viburno” (Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Montepulciano)

The Viburno exhibits a strength of flavor and aging potential, with more subtle tannins flirting with the palate. Intense dark fruits, leather and spicy notes are balanced with a smooth body and elegant full mouth feel. A special wine that is best appreciated with lamb and beef, but equally comfortable with a robust pasta.

Poderi Crisci Merlot Riserva  (Merlot 100%)

The Merlot Riserva, offers a very concentrated, intense nose, full of black fruit and cigar box with leather and burnt cocoa, showing great Merlot concentration. An equally rich palate offers ripe black berry and also cherries, cigar box fine cedary tannins and chocolate, cocoa after taste, very big wine with great elegance. A very refined and balanced Merlot with great aging potential.

Poderi Crisci Montepulciano

A very well balanced wine offering leather, berry and rosemary notes on the nose. The palate is smooth, refined and complex offering lots of earthy dark berry notes, a hint of cinnamon and spices compliment the silken tannins leading to a long, pleasant off dry finish. Wild mushrooms and anise compliment the medium mouth feel the wine has to offer.

Poderi Crisci Syrah

The Poderi Crisci Syrah is an unmistakable Burgundian style Syrah, exhibiting smooth cigar box and cedar wood notes on the nose. A silken dark plum and cherry on the palate followed by a finish laden with spice, pepper and liquorice combine to make this wine attractive to a wide audience and leaves a lasting impression.

Agrumetto (375ml)
Citrus liqueur produced from fresh Waiheke Citrus fruits. in an artisan method with traditional family recipe from Napoli.

AcquaVite (375ml)
Produced from selected grapes, a more refined digestive than traditional Grappa due to the method of production. Very intense cinnamon and spice characteristics.

 RESTAURANT 

The acclaimed Poderi Crisci Restaurant is widely recognised as one of the finest on Waiheke. In 2014 Poderi Crisci was the only Waiheke restaurant to receive the recognition of being a Metro Top 50  restaurant as well as being listed in the Cuisine Good Food Guide containing the best 70 restaurants in New Zealand.

Enjoy al Fresco dining all year round in this stunning location looking across the valley, with the west facing   restaurant capturing the final rays of the setting sun. The restaurant and surrounds are ideally suited for a  casual lunch, family gatherings or celebrations, weddings and romantic dinners.

Please note that due to the intimate size of the restaurant, bookings are essential for the Weekend Long Lunch and degustation dinners. We also recommend booking well in advance over the summer months and long weekends.

 

THE FOOD

Our chefs are inspired by the finest traditional Italian cuisine, prepared using the finest local produce. Modern touches and techniques are used throughout to highlight the flavours and textures of all our dishes.

Our a la carte menu changes daily as we take advantage of our kitchen garden and the freshest ingredients available on the day. The same is true for our famous “Italian Long Lunch” menu and degustation menus.

   

WEEKEND LONG LUNCH 

The “ITALIAN LONG LUNCH “ an Italian tradition faithfully recreated every Saturday and Sunday at Poderi Crisci. It’s a time to enjoy the age-old Italian values of family, friends, food and celebrating life in style.

An Italian lunch (il pranzo) is considered the most important meal – and on Weekends at Poderi it is treated as such and has fast become an institution for those who reside on Waiheke and those very welcome visitors .

Our Long Lunch Menu changes weekly and features the timeless classics designed to be perfectly matched with Poderi wines. ($100pp Excl Beverage)

The lunch starts @ 12.00,1230 or 1pm and progresses through many courses ending with Dolci or Frommaggio @ approximately 1630. Please advise if you have time constraints. We will do our best to accommodate, but we have a saying;
“There is always plenty more thyme in the garden, and there is always another ferry”

 DEGUSTATION MENU 

Whether enjoying a romantic winters evening in front of our large open fire with classic opera in the background, or enjoying a lazy summers evening dining al fresco watching the sunset over the hills to the west, our dinner degustation style dining experience will always be one to savor.

Our degustation dinners are hosted on Saturday evenings, and bookings are essential. An 8 course degustation dinner graciously moves from one delicious course into the next, offering also every opportunity to sample our range of handcrafted wines.

The menu does change daily, however the overall format remains the same. The 8 Course degustation dinner costs $115 per person, or $190 with the matching wines included. A full wine and drinks list is available also.

I was lucky enough to have a booking over the peak holiday period. The venue was at capacity but still had an intimate, personable sense that you were sitting in your own personal paradise. Perfect and delicious example of the Long Italian Lunch
At a huge farmhouse table our party of 18 members of the extended family enjoyed the most extraordinary array of exquisite dishes that seemed to never end. No dish was huge or heavy – it was possible to comfortably complete the meal, despite the multitude of courses. Yellowfin tuna with artichokes; “simple” breads with light and peppery olive oil; lamb chops with aubergine-stuffed potatoes; an amusing but delicious version of tiramisu… this was not even half of the list. And the wine complements were inspired.

Of course I have eaten Italian food in many restaurants in many countries, including Italy, but this felt more authentic. After our relaxing sojourn, we felt like we had truly experienced a fine example of a Long Italian Lunch.

It’s not often that I find myself writing a letter to the owner of a restaurant and I am not a food critic by trade (although I’d love to be). I do, however, have the fortune of travelling the world on business and have the wonderful privilege of dining in some truly remarkable restaurants. Poderi Crisci on Waiheke is one of those that are of particular remark. My partner and I visited for a long lunch on Sunday and were treated to the absolute gastronomic adventure, which is, Poderi Crisci. The uncomplicated nature of both the food and environment with the touch of indulgence and flare is a true point of differentiation and I wish you all the success in future. Step inside and feel Italy. A bright and airy space dedicated and designed to maximise your wine tasting and gastronomic experience. “La Locanda” is a breath of fresh air. The perfect place to enjoy freshly shucked Te Matuku bay oysters accompanied by a glass of Poderi Crisci Arneis.

“Locanda” is the name given to a traditional Italian roadside inn. Offering the traveller or explorer a chance to quench their thirst, satisfy their appetite and relax from the world for a while.

FUNCTIONS AND EVENTS

Functions at Poderi Crisci are always bespoke, and designed with the wishes of our guests in mind. We can design bespoke menus to suit any occasion, from corporate launches, birthdays, weddings and any other special occasion that might arise.

Outdoor or indoor sapces available to cater for events from 10 – 140 guests. From walk and fork style cocktail parties to elaborate dinners and glamorous awards nights, we will also work with you to make your event a most memorable occasion for you and your guests.

There are many possibilities for holding your business, team or social functions and events at Poderi Crisci. No matter what type of event you would like to hold at Poderi, we will always give the best service and menu to suit your needs.

Some of our popular options for functions include the Barrel Room, set in the cellar of the estate. The room is beautifully rustic with sturdy wooden tables placed between the wooden casks and rows of stacked bottles, creating the most stunning ambience. The main restaurant and outer decked areas are perfect for larger functions and we are also able to organise marquees for extra undercover seating/ standing areas. The gardens provide a stunning setting for ceremonies and other event requests.

We regularly use all Waiheke transport providers including Fullers (Passenger ferries), Sealink (Car ferries) so are able to quote and / or take care of your travel arrangements both on the island and from Auckland.

Being at Poderi Crisci feels a world away from Auckland. If you want to create a special event with the most memorable food, service and setting, we will do our utmost to accommodate your group.

Antonio Crisci and the team have designed the perfect way for you to become part of the Poderi Crisci family. As the famous credit card tagline said, membership has its privileges, beginning with exclusive use of our La Locanda for your next intimate function, conditions  apply,

La Locanda has been specifically created and designed as a venue for exclusive events such as hosting new vintage tastings and private aperitivo evenings all focussed on ‘En Primeur’ members.

FROM OUR CELLAR TO YOURS 

Due to the genuine boutique nature of the vineyard, a select amount of wine is bottled prior to public release. This is a great opportunity to build your cellar and create a collection that allows you to savour our skillful winemakers craft and the subtle uniquenesses from vintage to vintage.

This unique ‘En Primeur Collezione’ of 24 bottles is delivered in carefully packed wooden boxes, with a detailed description of the harvest, wine making techniques and winemakers notes for each wine.

You will be invited to join us for the harvest – including grape stomping if you wish – to have a full understanding the craft that goes into Poderi Crisci wines.
As a member you will also have the opportunity to create your own personalized label* as if owning a small part of the Poderi Crisci family.

EVENTS 

From July to September members can, whilst dining, exclusively enjoy Poderi Crisci wines at the cellar door rate – a discount of 50%. Or purchase a case and enjoy two bottles at the table and take 10 home.

As a member you will be emailed with ‘En Primeur’ preferential booking offers before we have any special events at Poderi Crisci, such as our annual ‘Live Opera Night’, wine tastings, ‘Masterclass’ cooking classes, Onetangi Beach Races and charity lunches. These events tend to book out so we will invite you one week prior.

Book a Table

To book a table at Poderi Crisci or Locanda, simply complete the form. Our online booking system will check availability and confirm your reservation instantly. If you would like to request a specific table or area, please note this in our comments box and we will do our best to accomodate.

  • Mondays – 12pm till 3.30pm
    Al a Carte available for parties of 5 and below. Reservations of 6 and above will require our long lunch menu at $110pp.

Reservation Policy

Please note that for all bookings, a nominated credit card is required to secure your reservation.

If you have not provided a credit card when you made your reservation, please send us an email to secure it. The final guest numbers will need to be confirmed 24 hours in advance, and this will be the minimum number that will be charged, as this is the number the kitchen works with for ordering and preparation. A charge of 50.00 per person will be applied in the event of a no-show, also applicable for reduced covers not communicated to the restaurant.

We will endeavour to contact you in advance of your reservation; however should we be unable to reach you, please email us to confirm your booking 24 hours in advance at the minimum. We reserve the right to cancel your unconfirmed booking at our discretion and without notice.

Most dietary and allergy requirements can be catered for. Please email or telephone the restaurant to advise if you have any dietary requirements. Children aged 10 years and above our welcome to dine.

A visit to Poderi Crisci is an experience that starts with the journey. A chance to enjoy some of the finest scenery Waiheke has to offer over rolling hillsides and picturesque valleys. A journey worthy of the destination.

There are various options to get to Poderi Crisci. WaiCabs, Waiheke Island Shuttles and Ananda Tours will be happy to meet your party at the ferry terminal and offer great rates to Poderi Crisci guests. Alternatively, and providing there is a sober driver, Waiheke Auto Rentals provide great deals on rental cars. We also provide a landing pad so you can arrive in style via helicopter.

Please note Al a Carte is only available on weekdays for parties up to 5 guests. Reservations of 6 guests and above require our Long lunch menu at $100pp.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Public holidays at Poderi Crisci will have our Italian Long lunch menu available from 12.30pm till 4.30pm. Al a Carte will not be available.
A public holiday surcharge of 15% will be added to your bill.

Due to the intimate nature and style of our dinner service, we suggest that this service is unsuitable for children under 6 years of age.

Saturday / Sundays Long Lunch. Lunch begins around 12:30pm and runs through till approximately 4:00pm. The menu changes weekly and costs $100pp excluding beverages.

Saturday dinner bookings; In the evening we run an 8 Course Degustation Dinner for $115pp per person including beverages. No A La Carte option. (Not suitable for children under 6 years of age).

LA LOCANDA OPENING HOURS

  • Tuesday & Wednesday, 12.30pm – 3.30pm
  • Saturday – Sunday, 11.30am – 4.30pm
  • Friday Night Aperitivo, from 5pm Fridays, join us for pre weekend drinks and selection of complimentary canapes and nibbles. (Dinner menu available)

The Locanda offers an ideal alternative for those looking to spend just a little time at Poderi Crisci, offering wine tastings, smallers snacks and sharing platters. Also available for private events.

Cellar Door sales are also available to public via our dedicated online purchasing service.

SUMMER 23/24 HOURS

As we look forward to summer we also look forward to welcoming our regular guests and new faces to Waiheke and Poderi Crisci.

Our updates hours for summer 2023/24 as well as some special new offerings are below.

Monday, Thursday and Friday Lunch service we offer both a la carte and long lunch menu options to groups of 5 or less diners. Groups of 6 or more enjoy our long lunch menu or sharing menu options.

La Locanda will be open Tuesday and Wednesdays from 12 midday until 3.30pm offering a specialised A la Carte menu, sharing platters, wines and tastings.

Friday evenings we invite you to join us for our weekly Aperitivo event. Enjoy a drink to ease into the weekend with and indulge in a complimentary selection of canapes and nibbles. Restaurant open for A la Carte dinner service.

Saturday and Sunday we serve our acclaimed long lunch in the main restaurant, with the Locanda open for lighter meals and tasting platters.

Saturday evenings in the resaurant we serve our 8 course degustation menu which can also be enjoyed with matching wines from the Poderi Crisci range.
