Poderi Crisci vineyard encompasses 7.7 hectares on a north facing slope set amongst a sheltered amphitheatre and a narrow rocky strip believed to be 30 million set years older than the rest of the Island.
Located at the end of a country lane, Poderi Crisci is a family-owned vineyard and restaurant with Italian flair and a passion for traditional winemaking. For four generations the Crisci family have been immersed in the art of food and wine. Antonio, born and raised in Napoli, arrived in NZ in the early ’90s quickly making a name for himself in the Auckland scene with the establishment of Toto restaurant in Nelson Street. With his partner Vivienne Farnell they opened Non Solo Pizza in 1996, now an institution in Parnell.
The first merlot vines were planted in 2000. The success of the first vines led to the planting of other grape varieties and vegetable gardens with Poderi Crisci being founded in 2008 and the restaurant opening in 2010. Antonio, a visionary, has transformed the Waiheke Island vineyard into a place people will visit to wine, dine and have ‘layers of experience.’
Just arriving at Poderi Crisci you may well think that you have been transported to Tuscany.
Antonio Crisci’s life long passion for flavours begun with his grandmother teaching him the secrets of Italian cuisine, in his mum’s kitchen- Napoli, Southern Italy. His love of food drove him to open his first restaurant in his hometown at the tender age of 19.
With dreams of sailing around the world, Antonio left Italy with his travels eventually leading him to arrive by yacht to Paihia, NZ in 1991. He made his way to Auckland working in a few restaurants and was surprised by how few European products were accessible in NZ’s largest city. Still keen to see more of the world he travelled to Australia, Indonesia and back to Europe then decided to make NZ his home in 1993. Within a few months he begun to introduce his favourite Italian flavours through his vision of what an Italian restaurant should be, ‘Toto’ in Nelson St, Auckland. The flagship restaurant was welcomed with great enthusiasm in the somewhat barren dining scene of the era and quickly attracted Auckland’s movers & shakers. It is also where he met the then Maitre’D of ‘Toto’ Vivienne Farnell. They have two daughters, Bella & Marilena now aged 14 & 12.
Antonio’s influence in the Auckland scene is dotted around the inner city with Il Forno cafe in Ponsonby and what has become a Parnell institution, Non Solo Pizza, established in 1996 with Vivienne. It is still going strong after 19years. Antonio’s contribution to the industry was recognised in 2009 when he was voted ‘Outstanding Hospitality Personality of the Year’ at the prestigious Lewisham Awards. His presence is in demand at food and wine festivals such as Taste of Auckland, The Waiheke Vintage Festival and Festival Italiano.
Poderi Crisci is a culmination of his vision as a restaurateur, his Italian heritage and his commitment to living the New Zealand dream. On entry to Poderi Crisci you are immediately graced with old world style, charm and the bountiful gardens give you a sense of being in a self sufficient safe haven.
Antonio believes Waiheke is the ultimate destination for food lovers and that the vineyard fulfils the dreams of a lot of chefs. That is, to have a garden full of fresh produce to choose from daily and being able to create the menu of the day based on the freshest of ingredients.
Antonio loves being an owner/operator of his restaurants and he gives constant attention to detail and to continually uphold standards of food and wine service. He loves that he has the possibility to “entirely express my vision of food being an integral part of life”.
Our wines are lovingly produced in French oak barriques over an 18 month period in our underground cellar. Possibly the most beautiful cellar room in Waiheke.
Influenced by old world styled wine and grape varieties, our wines are produced with a respect for nature and minimal intervention on the wine making process. Focus is on quality above all else with the majority of vineyard work carried out by hand.
All the fruit used for Poderi Crisci wines is estate grown and selectively hand harvested. The grapes are extensively sorted in the vineyard to ensure that only the very best fruit comes into the winery, a second more intensive sorting process is then carried out prior the crushing, finishing with a natural melalactic and aged in French oak barrique using 25% of new oak for the red varieties.
PODERI CRISCI-A SUSTAINABLE & FULLY ACCREDITED VINEYARD SINCE 2012
One of the finest examples of a kitchen garden lines the entrance to Poderi Crisci. It is not uncommon to see the chefs in the garden sourcing what are definitely the freshest possible ingredients and herbs. Our garden is carefully managed by our talented head gardener providing fresh seasonal produce all year round.
From a bountiful herb garden, salad leaves and tomatoes, to artichokes, figs, pumpkin and some of the finest zucchini you will ever see. We truly believe you cannot match the goodness that comes when you go straight from the garden to plate. Via the kitchen of course.
The garden highlights the importance that we place in fresh ingredients used with high quality condiments such as our own olive oil and Sapa. Finish your meal with Agrumetto Citrus liqueur, Aquavite and other Italian influenced speciality products created at the vineyard.
Another reason things just taste better at Poderi Crisci.
Poderi Crisci Ombra 2014 (Cabernet Franc Predominant, Sparkling Rose)
An exciting Sparkling Rose with a fine yeasty, fresh bakery character reminiscent of Champagne. Floral nose contains hints of wild strawberry, peach nectarine and cassis. On the Palate, fine beads, very refreshing dry aperitif style. Wild Blackberry and Peachy with a great mouth feel and good length. .
Poderi Crisci Rose 2014 (Merlot Predominant)
A great example of a Merlot Bianco style wine in the fashion of the southern French and Italian Roses. From Merlot grapes, the 2014 Rose displays light summer fruits with a flinty earthy character. The Salmon blush hints at the body, light and playful, a fresh lively Rosé, with a great structure with a very refreshing palate, dry style with a lingering fresh finish to stand up to all great summer luncheons. .
PoderiCrisci Pinot Grigio 2013
Subtle pale straw with mineral notes and hints of yellow plum and dried cut grass. Baked figs and a touch of fresh cinnamon spice. The palate is loaded with fresh apple and pears, with a driven mouth filling citrus finish that lingers pleasantly, releasing pinenut and almond notes.
Poderi Crisci Arneis 2013
Poderi Crisci proudly lines up against a select group of NZ vineyards producing this exciting and cheeky variety from the Piemonte region in the north of Italy. Arneis is a colloquial term, translating to “Little Rascal”, a wine that exhibits intense citrus notes with apple, pear and vanilla in a bone dry style. A refreshing wine that is best enjoyed with delicate seafoods, sunshine, and company. Poderi Crisci is currently producing the only Waiheke grown Arneis.
Poderi Crisci Chardonnay 2012
An elegant young Chardonnay with a flirtatious light straw colour. Incredibly complex nose offering hints of freshly grilled nuts (almond) and marzipan alongside zests of citrus fruits.. A very finely structured wine with a good drive leading into a great lingering finish. An unmistakable Burgundian style Chardonnay.
Poderi Crisci “Nostrum” 2011 (Merlot / Cabernet Franc)
In the Tuscan tradition of Table wine, Poderi Crisci produced “Nostrum”. The name taken from the latin for “Ours”. This merlot predominant blend was 12 months in french oak, and the floral and fruity characteristics of the Cabernet Franc make this wine especially approachable and welcoming in any season. On the nose Maraschino cherry and doris plum with hints of charred wood. Also cocoa and spice. The palate is entertained with concentrated black fruit coulis and jams, leather and earthen notes lead to a finish ripe with nutty tannins.
PoderiCrisci “Viburno” 2009 (Merlot / Cabernet Franc)
Following the success of the 2008 vintage, the 2009 Viburno again benefited from 18 months in French Barriques. The 2009 vintage displays stronger notes and a more refined balance, offering a very concentrated nose exhibiting cigar & black fruit with brushed leather and intense spiciness. Very driven yet elegant, a full palate offers black fruit, blackberry jam and elderberry. Being a younger wine, the 2009, although drinking very well, is still a little shy of its true potential. A firm structure gives way to let the wine open and offer even more forest fruits and dark mushrooms when decanted.
Viburno 2010 (Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Montepulciano)
The Viburno 2010 is a result of one of the best vintages that Waiheke has enjoyed to date. The addition of 5% Montepulciano to the Merlot / Cabernet Franc blend adds extra depth and a wholesome, spicey finish to the wine completing the overall mouth feel that was widely enjoyed in the previous 2008 and 2009 vintages. A richer, complex wine displaying the same black fuit, jammy and earthen characteristics of previous vintages, but with a more balanced complexity and pleasant tannic activity.
Poderi Crisci “Viburno” 2011 (Merlot / Cabernet Franc)
The 2011 vintage produced a Viburno that retained the earthy, driven berry notes of previous vintages. A softer mouth feel that previous vintages and refined balance. A solid, rich berry drive that leads to earthy spiced tannins on the finish give the 2011 an exciting characteristic that will become fuller with time. Decanting the 2011 opens the wine to release the cigar, leather and cocoa notes as well as intense blackberry.
Poderi Crisci Merlot Riserva 2009 (Merlot 100%)
100% Merlot grown on a small knob of clay in front of the house. Very low cropping, hand harvested and great care taken, result in a great wine with aging potential. In the winery no intervention is practiced (Natural Yeast ferment) Aged for 18 months in French Oak Barriques with 30% new wood. Rich, full, very ripe plums, mulberries, elderberries & dark chocolate. Very concentrated, long & persistent, rich & voluptuous with silky cigar boxy tannins on the finish.
Poderi Crisci Merlot Riserva 2010 (Merlot 100%)
The 2010 Merlot Riserva, produced in the best vintage Waiheke has experienced. A very concentrated, intense nose, full of black fruit and cigar box with leather and burnt cocoa, showing great Merlot concentration. An equally rich palate offers ripe black berry and also cherries, cigar box fine cedary tannins and chocolate, cocoa after taste, very big wine with great elegance. A very refined and balanced Merlot with great aging potential.
Poderi Crisci Syrah 2012
Vibrant raspberry and red fruits with a hint of leather and cedar form an intriging and seductive nose. A medium weighted palate offers redfruits, raspberries and wild strawberries with subtle doris plum. Quite structured with good active tannins, reminisent of a good concentrated Pinot Noir.
Poderi Crisci Montepulciano 2012
Our Montepulciano is a delightful wine that displays all the earthy properties of an old world wine, with good balance of light flowery and fresh berry notes and a lovely peppery finish that offers a great example of this classic Italian variety.
Citrus liqueur produced from fresh Waiheke Citrus fruits. in an artisan method with traditional family recipe from Napoli.
Produced from selected grapes, a more refined digestive than traditional Grappa due to the method of production. Very intense cinnamon and spice characteristics.

I have been meaning to thank you all very much for such a super lunch a few weeks ago!! Don’t worry – you will not see us for a while! A few of my friends are so excited to try this place- and am sure they will.Thank you once again!
Hello there, We would just like to thank the team at Poderi Crisci for a PERFECT lunch last Friday. We were extremely fortunate that our lunch booking was accepted ( as we were the only people there) but everybody was so welcoming, the food was outstanding and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, blessed as we were with a stunning day. So, once again thank you, a memorable lunch, a great team, we cannot wait to return. Our recommendation is assured.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to, Mike and the rest of the team for a fantastic day on Saturday. My friends and I had an absolutely fantastic time and thought the food and the atmosphere was great. I’ll be planning another trip back for sure…… I really appreciate all te effort you went to to help make my day special and you certainly pulled that off, thanks so much.
Hi Mike, Just wanted to say a big thank you for making Saturday a special one for us. Everyone commented on what a great host you were and I really appreciated your help in setting everything up and taking care of us. We all had a fabulous time. Cheers
Merlot-based blend with good weight and strong, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, showing good complexity. Already highly enjoyable.
Dear Mike, We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed Saturday evening. The food was exceptional. You guys were amazing. Everyone in our group loved Poderi….and I have to say that says something as they are a sophisticated group from all over the world and very food conscious. I can’t say enough to express what a great meal and evening it was. Thank you to you and your team and of course to Antonio.
Hi Mike and Antonio, I hope this e-mail finds you both well. Hamish and I would like to thank you for hosting our wedding. As you know, we had the most wonderful day. It was perfect. The venue is magical, you should both be very proud of what you have achieved as I don’t think there is anything like Poderi Crisci, anywhere. All our guests are still raving about the whole day. A lot of them had never been to Waiheke so they had no idea what to expect. It’s safe to say they were all blown away. We are so grateful to Mike for being the ultimate host, ensuring that everything went off without a hitch. If there were dramas behind the scenes, we didn’t see them! Also, thank you Mike for responding to the endless e-mails, it is difficult to organise a wedding from Overseas but you made it easy. Thank you Antonio for the food. We choose Poderi Crisci for two reasons, the first, the location, However, the main reason we chose Poderi Crisci was due to Antonio’s reputation for food. We weren’t disappointed. The food was impeccable – the most common compliment we have received from our guests has been about the food, I don’t think anyone has had food like that before at a wedding. Particularly at a wedding catering for 100 plus people. We can’t wait to come back and have a nice long lunch! All the best, we look forward to seeing you both again soon. Cheers
It’s not often that I find myself writing a letter to the owner of a restaurant and I am not a food critic by trade (although I’d love to be). I do, however, have the fortune of travelling the world on business and have the wonderful privilege of dining in some truly remarkable restaurants. Poderi Crisci on Waiheke is one of those that are of particular remark. My partner and I visited for a long lunch on Sunday and were treated to the absolute gastronomic adventure, which is, Poderi Crisci. The uncomplicated nature of both the food and environment with the touch of indulgence and flare is a true point of differentiation and I wish you all the success in future. We are so glad we visited and will no doubt be back soon!
